Confession. I love horn stems. They just piece of work for me and they await crawly. Currently I ain five: Ii Vipratis and Iii Ropp Vintage.

The Vipratis are awesome of course, simply more "Showy." The ropps are workhorses. They are old stummels turned sometime in the last century, smoothen or blasted, and finished with a horn stem. They are small pipes. I ain a vintage 347 Belge, which is perfect for virginia flakes. (Enjoying some vintage 2009 FVF in it correct now.) I also own a 428B which is great for a brusque fume of Cube cuts, and a 321 stubby bulldog nosewarmer which does information technology all well, and is extremely low-cal for effortless clenching.

The buttons are cut well, and are non wide - the stummels are pencil shank, and the stem carries that line correct through to the push- very like to the sometime style. They all pass a cleaner perfectly. For the toll, currently $75 for the sandblasted line, these pipes are an extreme bargain for both the beginner and the experienced smoker.

Edit: they are modest pipes. They are very lightweight and are all good clenchers. They offering a solid 20 to 30 minute smoke and I'g fairly certain that they come without a bowl coating, so a new smoker should exist careful with breaking them in.

I love my older Ropp pipes. I've been on the debate well-nigh Horn stems. I always hear alien opinions.

I guess this is a love information technology or hate it thing, but I actually like them. They are softer than acrylic but harder than vulcanite. They won't oxidize like vulcanite. They clean up nice.
The thicker push button on the ropps allows you to residuum the pipage in your teeth without really clenching on it - considering of the lightness of the weight of the pipe, it sorta just hangs there without effort.
If you like a lite pipage, I don't think you take much to lose here… $75 is not a bad bargain, the drilling is spot on, and they pass a fluffy cleaner effortlessly.

I've been eyeing the Vintage belge for a while. What's the tenon, stainless? I really like the one horn stem I take. Unfortunately, it's attached to a super heavy stummel, so I chewed correct through it in brusk society. I bet they're slap-up on lighter pipes.

Everything was going well until I read that they had a thick stalk and a big push button ☹️… quite the opposite of what I similar.

They look pretty, yep!

Am I the but one whose jaw hurts from thick $.25? (no clench, just from having to smoke with the mouth wide open?). Reminds me of the feeling subsequently going to the dentist..

You lot are obviously not a cigar smoker 🙂

I dislike thick bits as well. These pipes are then light that you do non really "clench". You tin balance them on your lower teeth and the push button confronting the back of the top tooth holds it in place. No pressure at all.

the stems at the bits are no thicker than a pencil for size comparing.

I have a tall billiard that I beloved. The stem does take some getting used to, but it is soft on the teeth.

If you have admission to a white compound wheel, go on the bit polished regularly and it volition become a long way toward the longterm life of the stem. They'll last forever as long as they're kept in proficient shape, simply one time they kickoff to get into a chewed, wearisome country, moisture gets into them and softens them further and everything gets exacerbated.

Bonus tip - Keep your horn stem pipes FAR away from your dog! Personal experience, LOL. Dogs I've known admittedly LOVED the season and feel of horn stems and in France nosotros had more than a few people come in for stalk replacements because their dog had gotten hold of their piping left lying on some side table, and absolutely gnawed the stem off the basin.

Noted. On both counts!
